How income reduces the CCB
Your amount drops once your adjusted family net income (AFNI) passes $38,237. The reduction depends on how many children you have:
| Children | AFNI $38,237 to $82,847 | AFNI over $82,847 |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | 7% of income over $38,237 | $3,123 + 3.2% of income over $82,847 |
| 2 | 13.5% | $6,022 + 5.7% |
| 3 | 19% | $8,476 + 8% |
| 4 or more | 23% | $10,260 + 9.5% |
Example
One child aged 3, family income $50,000: maximum $8,157 minus 7% of $11,763 ($823.41) = $7,333.59 a year, about $611 a month.
When it is paid
The CCB is paid monthly, usually around the 20th. See the CCB payment dates. If your yearly amount is under $240, it is paid in one lump sum in July.
Keep getting it
You and your spouse or common-law partner must both file a tax return every year, even with no income. Amounts are recalculated each July from the previous year's return.

Frequently asked questions
Is the Canada child benefit taxable?
No. You don't report the CCB as income on your tax return.
When does the CCB go up?
Amounts are indexed to inflation every July. Your own amount changes each July based on your latest tax return.
Do provinces pay extra?
Several provinces and territories have their own child benefits, which the CRA pays together with the CCB.
