Is Rent Tax Deductible in Ontario? How to Claim the Rent Credit
Rent isn't a federal tax deduction, but Ontario renters can get money back through the Ontario energy and property tax credit, part of the Ontario Trillium Benefit. Complete Form ON-BEN with your tax return and enter the rent you paid for your principal residence.
Missed it? You can still claim by sending a completed ON-BEN with a letter or Form T1-ADJ. The benefit is paid monthly as part of the Ontario Trillium Benefit.
Step by step
-
File your income tax return.
The credit for a benefit year is based on the previous year's return.
-
Complete Form ON-BEN.
Tick the box to apply for the Ontario energy and property tax credit.
-
Enter the rent you paid for your principal residence.
If you live with a spouse or common-law partner, report the rent for both of you.
-
Keep your rent receipts.
The CRA can ask for them.
