Canada Carbon Rebate: Why It Ended and Who Got the Last Payment
The Canada Carbon Rebate for individuals has ended. The consumer fuel charge was set to zero on April 1, 2025, and the last quarterly rebate was paid in April 2025. There are no further payments, and the consumer carbon price was permanently removed from federal law in March 2026.
What happened
- The federal fuel charge stopped applying on April 1, 2025.
- Eligible residents of the affected provinces got a final rebate in April 2025. The CRA says there are no more quarterly payments after that.
- Bill C-4 received Royal Assent on March 12, 2026 and permanently repealed the consumer fuel charge.
Who paid the carbon tax
The consumer fuel charge applied to fuels like gasoline and natural gas in provinces using the federal system, and was collected through fuel prices. A separate system for large industrial emitters is not part of the consumer charge.
Haven't filed past returns?
People who were eligible but hadn't filed may still be able to get past rebates by filing; check the CRA's closed-program page for the current deadline.
